From the 4th of April to 5th of November 2023

Laurence Gancel, another perspective on the Mont-Blanc.

Laurence Gancel, a painter and creator, is showcasing her artworks dedicated to the landscapes of Mont-Blanc at the Hotel Hameau Albert 1er. She is a former business leader who quickly established herself in the artistic world. Drawing inspiration from her travels around the world, she paints figurative landscapes that delicately capture the shadows and lights of nature.

About Laurence Gancel

Laurence Gancel, born in Lyon, first spent her life away from paintbrushes as a business executive. While working in international trade in Paris, Laurence felt the need to connect with nature and the mountains.

At the foot of the Alps in the city of Geneva, she decided to take art courses where this new passion was born. Exhibiting her early works at the Paris City Hall, success carried her paintings to London and back to Paris again, adorning the walls of the Grand Palais for the Salon des artistes français.A rapid ascent in the art world led Laurence to paint the peaks of Mont Blanc, which she particularly enjoys exploring. It is in Saint-Gervais that she settled down to be closer to her muse.

« The power of nature is not an exact semblance. »

The paintings presented by Laurence during the exhibition are oil on the canva, both vertical and panoramic, with some reaching impressive sizes of 130 centimeters. The exhibition features summits, slopes, and landscapes of the valley; from Montenvers to Drus, capturing the impressive harmony of the shadows and light. The power of nature depicted here is not an exact representation but rather translates the artist's emotions by reinterpreting perspectives.

Around thirty artworks have adorned the walls of Hôtel Hameau Albert 1er, thanks to Laurence's initiative. She contacted Perrine Carrier to make the exhibition possible. This event has provided a fabulous showcase for painters, drawers, and photographers who wish to share their passion on the Hameau Albert’s 120th anniversary.

« In my paintings, I express the strengths, the light, the vibrations and the emotions that nature evoked inside of me»

During the exhibition's opening reception, in connection with the exhibition, Reine-Marie Faure, a lecturer and researcher at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, spoke about James David Forbes, whose name is still engraved on certain mountains in Chamonix.

It was precisely this renowned glaciologist and Scottish mountaineer who first opened the High Route in August 1842.

‘Altitudes’, an exhibition of paintings of Laurence Gancel, to be discovered in the salons of the Hotel Hameau Albert 1er.
